The Spirit of Volunteerism: Advocacy Everwell + Impact Fairfield County have partnered for a 2021 series called The Spirit of Volunteerism, which is a series of lunchtime programs that include a combination of inspiration from distinguished volunteers, education from field experts in the nonprofit sector and space to connect + network with fellow volunteers + charitable givers.

For this session, we'll be focusing on Advocacy, which we define as: service that shifts from actual tasks to spreading the word about an organization's work and persuading others to get involved, such as writing an Op-Ed article, reaching out to government officials or speaking to community or professional groups on behalf of an organization.

This Advocacy program will be featuring two remarkable women: Scarlett Lewis as our Distinguished Volunteer, and Nicole Heath as our Field Expert.

This program's inspiration will be brought to us by Scarlett Lewis, who founded the nonprofit The Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement after her son was murdered during the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in December 2012. After his death, Scarlett became part of the solution to the issues that we’re seeing in our society—and that also caused the tragedy. She decided to forgive and created the Movement, becoming an advocate for social and emotional learning (SEL) and character development that teaches children how to manage their emotions, feel connected, and have healthy relationships. Speaking across the US and internationally to diverse audiences, Scarlett urges everyone to become part of the solution.

This program's education will be led by Nicole Heath, a full time volunteer, who sits on the Board of CT Against Gun Violence, her state’s leading gun safety advocacy organization, The Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst, Mass, the Mgrublian Center for Human Rights and the Claremont McKenna College Parent Network Board. Nicole has served on several non profit Boards of Directors, including in the past: The Jose Limon Dance Foundation in NYC; Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Katonah, NY; and the Parent Boards of her children’s schools, Greenwich Academy and Brunswick School, as well as on the Alumni Board of her alma mater, The Bush School in Seattle. For 20 years, Nicole was also the Chairman for Greenwich and Stamford, CT of the Fresh Air Fund, a NYC social service agency that provides a summer vacation to 3000 underprivileged inner city NYC children.
